The positioning of the appliances and tools in your kitchen is massively important for creating a space that works efficiently and with as little maintenance as possible.
Specific aspects of your kitchen like your hob and your sink require well thought out positioning and there are many questions to consider when choosing the optimum layout for your bespoke kitchen.
Here are some of the most frequently asked questions answered by our experienced team of kitchen designers:
How do you plan the best kitchen layout?
A design tip to keep in mind is the triangle concept. Design your kitchen flow to include a direct, uninterrupted path between your fridge, sink, and hob for the tidiest, most seamless cooking experience. It’s also important to consider the placement of a bespoke pantry if you have the space for one.
After that, the next consideration is your primary use for your kitchen. Is having adequate space for a large family the most important thing, or are you more likely to use your kitchen for entertaining? The layout of the kitchen will depend on how it will need to be used, as well as the size, shape, style, and plumbing.
Where should the sink go?
The sink’s positioning can sometimes be dependent on the existing plumbing, but we can work with you to determine the best possible place for the sink. Most people prefer to have the sink in front of a window, which allows for a nice view while doing the washing up and provides enough space to comfortably use the sink.
If your kitchen is open plan, we usually recommend placing the sink as far away as possible from the social area of the space to hide away dirty dishes.
A sink on a kitchen island is also a good choice when the area by the window is lacking in space, as you’ll want to have enough room for drying dishes and having a place for washed foods or rinsed dishes to go in the dishwasher. This option can also be a good idea for hosts who can easily interact with their guests.
If you’re considering putting your sink on the island with a hob, we’d recommend that the island is quite long and wide to provide enough space for prep and seating, and also to keep in mind the distance between the sink and the dishwasher. It’s also helpful to have drainage grooves cut into your custom worktop rather than a messy drainage rack.
Where is the best position for the hob?
Typically, our clients prefer an open plan kitchen with a hob on a large kitchen island or in the centre of the kitchen bench with an elegant splashback.
Hobs on the kitchen island are perfect for those who like to entertain, but the placement and spacing is key. You don’t want seating too close to the hob, especially if you have children, because of the risk of burns from grease splashing.
Extraction is also an important consideration – will there be space for a ceiling extractor? Does your budget afford for a high-end unit that includes extraction?
Hobs should always be above the oven or a storage base unit, and your splashback should be an easy to clean material.
